Cheetham Hill Driving Test Centre: What to Practise Before Your Test
Written by the Cruise'N'Pass instructor team โ we take learners to the Cheetham Hill (Manchester) test centre every week. Here's what the area is really like to drive, where learners lose faults, and how to walk in ready. For all eight Greater Manchester centres, see our Manchester test centres guide.
Where the centre is
Cheetham Hill (Manchester) driving test centre is on Alderglen Road, Cheetham, Manchester, M8 0AL, run by the DVSA. It's one of the busiest test centres in Greater Manchester, covering the city's north and north-west: Cheetham Hill, Crumpsall, Blackley, Broughton, Salford, Hulme, Ancoats and the city centre.
On test day, follow your booking confirmation for arrival and parking instructions โ candidate parking is limited, so arrive in good time. General DVSA enquiries: 0300 200 1122. Everything else โ documents, the eyesight check, what to bring โ is on our test centres guide.
What driving around here is actually like
This is urban Manchester driving at its most complete. In a single lesson near the centre you can meet terraced-street parking, fast multi-lane approaches, bus lanes, tram-shared junctions and one-way systems. The roads our learners practise on most include:
- Cheetham Hill Road โ the classic test-area staple: heavy traffic, constant pedestrian activity, buses pulling out and side-road junctions that demand real observation.
- Bury New Road โ fast-moving with tram crossings and busy retail frontage; anticipation and mirror work win or lose it here.
- The A6010 corridor (Queens Road / Northumberland Street) โ multi-lane roundabouts and lane discipline under pressure.
- Great Clowes Street into Salford โ crossing between city and Salford road layouts, with wide junctions and changing speed limits.
- Residential grids in Crumpsall, Blackley and Cheetham โ meeting traffic, parked cars and the "who goes?" judgement calls examiners watch closely.
An honest word about "test routes": the DVSA doesn't publish official driving test routes, and anyone selling "the guaranteed Cheetham Hill routes" is guessing. What's real is the area and the road types โ and that's exactly what we train on, plus mock tests under exam conditions. Learn the driving, not a script.
Where learners lose faults here
From our mock tests around Cheetham Hill, the recurring faults are the same every year:
- Observation at busy junctions โ particularly where visibility is limited by parked cars or shop fronts. Slow in, look properly, commit.
- Lane discipline on multi-lane approaches โ early positioning on the A6010-style roundabouts prevents late, panicky changes.
- Bus and tram awareness โ vehicles pulling out, tracks at junctions, and the "is it moving or waiting?" read.
- Meeting traffic on terraced streets โ knowing when to hold back and when to proceed smoothly.
- Independent driving โ following sat-nav directions without drifting or hesitating. It's 20 minutes of the test; practise it deliberately.
None of these are fixed by memorising a route. They're fixed by driving the area until those situations are boring.
Pass rates and waiting times (2026)
The DVSA publishes practical test pass rates by test centre โ recent published figures for Cheetham Hill sit in the mid-40 per cents, a little below the national average, which is exactly what you'd expect from a demanding urban centre. Check the latest numbers in the DVSA's driving test data by test centre on GOV.UK.
Waiting times for practical tests vary through the year and across centres. Two practical tips: book your test only when your instructor says you're ready (an early test you fail costs ยฃ62โยฃ75 to rebook plus more lessons), and keep checking the booking system for earlier slots as they appear and disappear.
How to prepare in the final two weeks
- Run mock tests under exam conditions โ no coaching, sat-nav on, full route timing. We do these as standard before we'll book anyone in.
- Drive the area at different times โ school-run traffic and 4pm traffic feel nothing like Sunday morning. Experience both.
- Practise the manoeuvres in real local settings โ tight residential streets, not empty car parks.
- Sort the paperwork early โ provisional licence, theory pass certificate, and your own car's insurance/tax/MOT if you're using it.
- Do a final lesson near the centre โ a confidence top-up the day before is worth more than an extra hour a fortnight earlier.
If your test is close and you need hours fast, our 30-hour intensive course is built around exactly this countdown.
